Worst Craps Bets

posted in Craps

The majority of craps players stick to the basic bets like pass line, don’t pass line, come bets, and don’t come bets. Of course, this can get pretty boring so some players like to go off of the beaten path and make some riskier wagers. And this is fine provided your bankroll can hold out while waiting for the longer odds bets to come through.

However, there are a few wagers that you should never make regardless of how bored you are with the traditional wagers. That being said, here is a look at the worst bets in craps.

Just because craps is named after this bet does not mean that you should ever place it. To win the Craps bet, you need a 2, 3, or 12 to be rolled. You have a 1 in 9 chance of winning this bet against just a 7:1 payout for wins (it should be an 8:1 payout). Because of the fact that the payouts are off, the house has an 11% edge.

Lucky number 7 isn’t so lucky in craps because you won’t get paid nearly what you should for wins on this wager. You have a 1 in 6 chance of seeing a 7 rolled with the dice, but the casino is only willing to make 4:1 payouts on winning bets (should be 5:1). Seeing as how you’re only getting a 4:1 payout on this risky bet, the house has a 16% edge.

Field Bet

The field bet is the most misleading wager for people who don’t understand dice odds. If a 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, or 12 is rolled you win the field bet; this seems pretty good since you’re given 7 out of the possible 11 number combos. However, the chances of any of these numbers being rolled are only 16:36, and the house makes just even money payouts on winning bets. When everything is said and done, the house has a 5% advantage on these bets.
