NFL’s Joey Porter escapes Jail by paying $70k Casino Marker

Former NFL Pro Bowl linebacker Joey Porter recently got into trouble over the Holidays after being arrested for writing a bad casino check. Porter owed Las Vegas’ Hard Rock Casino $70,000, and the bank account he used to cover the funds came up short. Due to the amount owed, the 35-year-old was stopped in Bakersfield, California and arrested on a felony warrant.

Normally it’s not a felony to write a bad check. But with $70k at stake, the courts upgraded the charge against Porter, and he was jailed without a bail option. Luckily for the former football star, he was released from jail after paying the $70,000.

This matter all began in June and July when Porter was issued markers worth between $5,000 and $20,000 on eight different occasions. This usually isn’t a big deal for somebody who’s earned as much money as Joey Porter over their lifetime. So it was definitely a surprise to see him passing a bad check.

Because his account didn’t have enough funds to cover the gambling expenses, some people have wondered if Joey Porter is broke. So far, there’s been no confirmation on this matter, and if he were broke, it’d mark a huge financial collapse.

Porter signed a $24.5 million contract with the Arizona Cardinals in 2010 after racking up 32 sacks in three seasons with the Miami Dolphins. $17.5 million of this amount was guaranteed so he earned a good chunk of money, despite offering little production for the Cardinals.

While many professional athletes have a tendency to go broke after their careers, Porter only retired last July – and as a multi-millionaire we might add. Taking this into consideration, it’s likely that he simply used the wrong bank account to cover his Hard Rock Casino debts.
