Footballer Andros Townsend suspended due to Online Gambling
Andros Townsend is definitely one of England’s top young football players since he’s been on several national teams. However, the winger won’t be suiting up for England at the European Under-21 Championship after getting in trouble over online gambling.
Townshend admitted to downloading a phone app and placing sports bets when “he got bored.” And he didn’t realize that this was against Football Association (FA) rules until the unnamed online gambling site contacted him.
He explained this by saying, “In December, the betting company informed me they were reporting me to the FA for breaching betting regulations, as you can’t bet on games in a competition that either your loan clubs or parent team had played in during that current season.”
After the FA was contacted, Townsend never tried to deny the bets that he placed. And the 21-year-old explained that there were no ill intentions behind his online betting. “I knew I’d broken the regulations on a number of occasions and when I spoke to the FA. I was fully regretful and was ready to accept the deserved punishment,” he said. “Speaking honestly, there was never anything sinister going on. There was no match-fixing, no betting on my team to lose, no inside information.”
Townsend voluntarily withdrew from the England Under-21 team just recently and won’t be available for the European Championship. The FA also banned him from all football games for four months and fined the budding star £18,000.
This was Townsend’s last chance to play for the U-21 team because he’ll be 22 next year. And Townsend said that his exclusion from the European Championship will always serve as a reminder of his “stupid actions.”
Andros wants people to know that this was a fluke incident, and he doesn’t plan on making any more foolish decisions in the future. “I’m angry with myself because I’ve always been proud of how I conduct myself off the pitch,” he stated. “I don’t drink, don’t go to nightclubs, I’m never in trouble and always dedicate myself to being a successful professional footballer.”
